Product Recommendation's
When adopting a guinea pig, it's important to have the right supplies to keep them happy, healthy, and comfortable. Here are some products I recommend to help you get started: I frequently use these products or, have recommended these products and seen positive results and feedback!
Fleece Bedding
Fleece bedding is an excellent option for guinea pig owners looking for a comfortable, reusable, and cost-effective alternative to traditional bedding like wood shavings or paper. However, fleece requires more regular upkeep than traditional bedding options. This is my favorite fleece YouTube video that is well guided and instructed and gives pros and cons for fleece.
Paper VS Aspen Shavings
When choosing between paper bedding and aspen shavings for your guinea pig, both have distinct benefits and drawbacks. Paper bedding is highly absorbent, soft, and gentle on your guinea pig’s feet, making it an excellent choice for those prone to foot problems like bumblefoot. It also controls odor well and is virtually dust-free, reducing the risk of respiratory issues. Paper bedding can be more expensive, though, and it needs frequent changing as it becomes saturated quickly.
In contrast, aspen shavings are a natural, wood-based option that provides excellent absorption and helps manage odors. They are more affordable and readily available, making them a popular choice for many guinea pig owners. Unlike pine or cedar, aspen is safe for guinea pigs because it’s low in harmful oils and dust. However, aspen can be a bit rougher than paper bedding and may create more mess around the cage as the lightweight shavings scatter easily. While aspen requires less frequent changing than paper, it still needs regular maintenance to keep your guinea pig’s cage clean.
This is one of my favorite YouTube videos to find out if shavings is right for you.
